Plasma of Hope and RAF Cosford Collaboration:
In this residency, I worked closely with the heritage and engagement team at Cosford to develop a series of workshops to deliver to a group of 30 young people suffering from Sickle Cell Anaemia.
This fantastic group aged between 5 and 18 explored the diverse history of the RAF at the museum with myself and Minorities in Service Historian Donald Campbell. Following that we worked on the principles of sculpture and 3d making to develop models, clay sculptures and plaster castings based on these unique and underrepresented histories. These works are currently being curated into an exhibition which will be on display at RAF Cosford. The group have all expressed great love for the workshops with some of the kids so eager to get involved that they missed trips to Alton Towers to attend the follow-up sessions.
The residency and workshops ran from December to May and were a joy to be involved with, many of these young people had never used clay or worked creatively in 3d and quite a few expressed their full intention to grow up to be sculptors to make artworks about brilliant Black people from history. I love my job.
