Chapel Ash Wolverhampton:
Artists Residency and Sculpture. May 2024
In this residency, I spent 2 months working with local community groups to develop the 4 sculptures which eventually evolved into the Indian Workers Association, Bhangra!, The Black Arts Movement and Recovery.
In both the Black Arts Movement and Recovery I worked closely with other artists eventually ensuring their right to the status of Co-Curator. In focus is Recovery: To create this piece I worked with the charity SUIT. In workshops at Wolverhampton Art Gallery and at the Connaught Rd
space I was able to develop relationships in which we looked at how the people recovering saw themselves, how they felt and how their relationships had suffered or were repaired explored through creative mediums. This was so positive! These workshops evolved alongside the users of the
space with a clear ally being the artist Matt Lloyd who was himself volunteering at SUIT. Matt and I worked on a design which I was able to build to his specification and was then unveiled in May at a fantastic event in Chapel Ash.
The relationships built between myself and the group were described by the lead supervisor at SUIT Christiane as ‘extremely valuable, giving the group an incredible opportunity and making the individuals involved feel a huge sense of purpose and encouragement’.
